Corrupted Mind is a name that’s been popping up on our radar a lot over the past few months. So much so that we had to sign a track from him for our label!!
The release ‘No Messing’ featuring Tranzmita recieved some amazing DJ feedback when we sent out the promos, is already working its way up the charts on JunoDownload, as well as onto a few key playlists. We decided we had to catch up with Corrupted Mind so you can find out a bit more about him…
Give us a little background on yourself, what first got you into D&B? Was there a particular track, or an event you went to that switched you onto the sound?
So I’m a pretty late bloomer to the whole drum and bass thing with only really finding out about it when I was 17-18. I did know of drum and bass but couldn’t name a single track or anything about it.
The whole thing started with future house music and I fell in love with the sounds that were coming out my phone the womps the beeps etc etc. This slowing moved on to drum and bass but was only Dominator tracks or similar style track. I hated anything else and didn’t even know there was other DNB apart from jump up.
Over time this grew into listening to more and more DNB
Who influences you as an artist? Is there anyone whose sound resonates with who you are?
I think for my main sound as an artist it’s just a massive mix of everything I’m influenced by at the time. I don’t really seem to have 1 person who I stick with. One week it might be Turno, the next A.M.C, then Monrroe, then maybe Javeon, it all depends on the vibe I’m going for.
You recently relocated to Bristol for a short while, how does the scene there differ to the South East where you’re from?
Bristol is a completely different world and makes Kent, where I currently live, look so so boring. The sound system culture is a core part of Bristol where Kent is full of old people and chavs
Raw Energy
We love your raw approach to social media. How has social media shaped your career as a drum and bass producer?
So with social media I really don’t like doing it. I am a fan of making good content but due to spending most of my time making music I don’t have the energy funds or motivation to make weird short form content. I’d rather be making music or working on something that has a bit more longevity.
I tend to be very lazy with my social media, I’m a one man team and of ten I struggle to come up with polished looking content.
Although I get lots of compliments for my social media content it all comes down to practice and just being able to talk to your audience. No one wants to watch a boring video so you need have a little thought into what you’re posting
Much like your social media, your tracks have a raw, energetic feel. Can you describe your creative process when producing a new track?
When making something new most of time I just start writing and see where it takes me and go from there
Biggest Challenge As A Producer
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a rising drum and bass producer?
The biggest challenge is getting gigs. I only started making music to get DJ shows. Getting onto the circuit is the hardest thing.
You can have the most unreal tunes, be the best DJ but still won’t get your shot unless you know the right people. As someone who lives in a small village miles away from anywhere, networking and finding these opportunities I so hard. Even harder now we have social media and 1000’s of other artists are all trying to get their chance
Yeah, I hear this from a lot of producers. On the flip side to that question, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given to success in the music industry?
The best piece of advice I got told was know your worth. Don’t undersell yourself and don’t let people take you for a ride
You’re already starting to make your mark, a booking at Boomtown & releases on labels like DnB Allstars, Subway Sounds, Liondub International, and NUCRU are testament to that! What’s the next milestone achievement you’re working towards?
So for me right now I’m aiming for a consistent amount of bookings where I’m playing out at least 3-4 times a month. On top of this I’m always aiming for a main stage, Boomtown booking every year, and at least one international show.
I’ve been working hard on trying to get signed to Shogun Audio for my liquid stuff so that’s always at the top of my list!
We mentioned all those other labels, but you also have you own label 2Ton that you run with Bully. Tell us about that, what made you want to launch your own imprint?
2Ton has been in the works for around 5 years, even before I was making music myself. Me and Bully have grown from nothing to where we are now together and we thought it’s only right to start our own label to release our music and showcase our vision.
We’ve had so much trouble with labels in the past, trying to find our click to join and be part of, in the end we thought let’s do it ourself
The DIY ethic is the whole reason this website exists! I’m all for it. Is there a particular ethos or vibe behind 2Ton?
We pride ourself on representing the full spectrum of music, mainly drum and bass, but anything and everything goes. We believe in shaping artists and building a community that will last for our lifetimes. We also want to have fun doing it!
Finally, we need to talk about ‘No Messing’ your new single on LoveThatBass, who would you describe it to people that haven’t heard it yet?
No messing is a gully, jump up slapper, ready to cut up the dance in any rave doubles with basically anything!
